CLASS BREAKDOWN
This class blends technique with performance, giving you the skills to feel confident and powerful every time you hit the floor.
Warm up & Conditioning
The class begins with a jazz-specific warm-up that focuses on activating the core, engaging key muscle groups, and building stamina. Expect sharp, isolated movements paired with fluid transitions to get the body moving. This section often incorporates plies, tendus, and parallel positions to introduce proper body alignment while increasing heart rate and strength. Conditioning exercises target the legs, arms, and core to enhance the power behind jumps, kicks, and turns.
Stretching for Flexibility
After warming up, we move into stretching to lengthen the muscles and improve range of motion. This segment emphasizes elongating lines, preparing the body for higher kicks and deeper lunges. Stretches are dynamic and active, often mirroring movements found in jazz choreography to build functional flexibility that directly supports performance.
Across the Floor – Turns, Jumps, Kicks
Across-the-floor drills focus on jazz fundamentals like pirouettes, jetés, and battements (kicks). Emphasis is placed on clean lines, strong spotting, and maintaining sharp yet controlled movement. This section also includes traveling steps, chassés, and leaps that help develop coordination and fluidity. Across-the-floor work allows dancers to refine technique while gaining confidence in larger movements.
Short Combos
The final portion of class ties everything together with a short jazz combination. These combos are fast-paced and energetic, blending sharp accents with smooth transitions – a signature of jazz choreography. Dancers focus on musicality, dynamics, and performance quality, learning to embody the rhythm and personality of the movement. This part of class encourages self-expression while reinforcing technical skills in a performance context.
